Welcome to the sixth edition of Tech Talents Brazil!
In this newsletter, I share real-time key talent movements in the Brazilian tech ecosystem, including founders entering and exiting stealth mode, executive-level movements in unicorns, and partner-level changes in local VC firms.
Before we get started, I wanted to share Carta’s H1 2024 State of Startup Compensation report. Given Carta’s coverage, this is probably the best way to get a quantitative overview of key general talent trends in the tech world. Even though the report is focused on US startups, I believe LatAm might be experiencing similar trends to some extent.
Here is what caught my attention in the report:
The startup industry is not growing as it used to in terms of employees. Headcount at Carta startups has been relatively flat since late 2022, meaning total departures have been very similar to new hires since then. Thankfully, layoffs seem to be decreasing significantly, with May 2024 having 38% fewer laid-off employees than January 2024.
Efficiency is the new rule. Seed startups had an average of 5.3 employees in H1 2024, 23% less compared to H1 2021. Companies that closed Series A rounds in H1 2024 were also 11% smaller in terms of number of employees than in H1 2021.
Employee retention is getting harder and harder. 43.4% of all employees on Carta who were hired in 2021 had left within two years. That proportion never reached 40% among workers hired in any year from 2016 to 2020.
